Labor Day 2022

Every year, the first Monday in September is set aside as an annual celebration of the social and economic achievements of American workers. Today we take a pause from our regular broadcast blog to talk about Labor Day: its history, its founders, etc. it has been recognized long before it became an official holiday on February 21st 1887 by the state of Oregon. Before that, in 1882 New York City had the first Labor Day celebration on September 5th. This included a parade. President Cleveland signed the law to make it nationally observed on June 28th 1894. The original founder of Labor Day is unclear. Some say that it is Peter McGuire of Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Others believe it to be Mathew McGuire of the International Association of Machinist. We find it a bit odd that they both have the same last name, but that’s beside the point. You can find a list of America’s labor leaders at the Labor Hall of Honor. Enjoy your holiday today celebrating the fruits of all your hard work!
